The Wonderful Side of Reddit
Reddit is one of the internets most popular social media, online discussion websites. While to the users of it, it’s a wonderful website to find people who are talking about similar interests, it has gained a stigma around the internet of being a breeding ground of hostility.
And while yes, there are some communities, called subreddits, that may be negative, even as an avid user I must admit that, there are many incredible subreddits out there for both the humorous and serious. Here are some of my personal favourites.
Warning before you approach this subreddit, this will not be everyone’s cup of tea. But to those of you out there, like me, who love the creepy and abnormal, then this subreddit is for you. This subreddit is dedicated to people’s real life scary encounters, and despite the dark nature of these posts, has a rather wholesome community of people commenting, offering possible reasoning behind the insane stories people posts, or hopes that they are alright.
R/todayilearned and r/explainlikeimfive
Two more productive and less scary subreddits than lets not meet, today i learned and explain like I’m five offer a look into the educational side of reddit. Both extremely active and extremely helpful, these subreddits offer a look into all those things you didn’t think you needed to know but wow are you glad you do now! Today i learned is simply dedicated to the weird and interesting facts that people come across, in the most random of areas. While explain like I’m five is a question centred subreddit, where people can ask about something they don’t understand and get it broken down for them to the bones.
For all you history buffs out there, 100 years ago today posts daily images, news articles, stories of things that happened 100 years ago on the day. It covers every aspect of history from a century ago. From the sad to the uplifting to the just plain weird, 100 years ago offers a look into the lives and times of our grandparents, with some amazing photos to accompany.
A subreddit dedicated to the wonderful websites people find, from all across the internet. There’s a large variety here, from websites dedicated to wasting time, to google in binary form, the internet is beautiful shows the most wonderful that websites makers and coders on the internet have used their skills to offer.
Roses are red, violets are blue, a classic short little love poem that has become a staple of valentines cards everywhere. This subreddit combines the simplicity of this little poem, with the general insanity of life, to create some hilarious little poems that will leave you crying from laughter. Started from this little guy, posters of boot too big set up jokes in the title of their images, and land the joke through the wonderful and wacky that is everyday life.
A true feat in photoshop skill or I suppose I should say arms, this subreddit is exactly what it says, a bunch of pictures of birds with arms. Truly the peak of creative genius befalls this subreddit, as people’s photoshop talent takes the most productive form. It’s pretty addicting, coming back each day to get a dose of the weirdly mesmerising portraits of birds with arms.
As a self-proclaimed Star Wars nerd, I can safely say this is my favourite subreddit! Filled with people who, in their words, reject the ‘anti-Imperial/pro-Rebel propaganda,’ presented in the Star Wars films, this subreddit is dedicated to the humorous, fan theories, art and more aimed to put the Empire in a good light.
